La Bienal de Flamenco of Sevilla 2010 is about to publish the programs of this year. The next month they will officially present the calendar of La Bienal which this time will be shorter.
In 2008 La Bienal started on September the 10th and finished October the 11th. This time, the festival will start September the 15th and will finish October the 9th, in total, one week shorter.
La Bienal 2010 (they still have to close some loose ends), will include 50 to 55 performances, of which approximately 20 of them will be absolute premieres, while in 2008 they were 26. The reduction of days for Bienal will cause that the artists cannot perform more than one day, even though there are some exceptions.
One of the most important characteristics of this year's Bienal has been the almost 300 projects which have been presented to the direction of Bienal. This made it difficult for them to select the ones that will be included in the program.
So, the program will include innovative and daring performances, just like they did with the poster of la Bienal 2010 which they have entrusted to 4 urban artists of the graffiti.
This time, they want to dedicate the event more to the cante. The slogan of la Bienal is "El flamenco de Viva voz (The flamenco of lively voice)". According to ABC, the direction of the festival got out of control due to the quantity of proposals that the artists sent them, above of all, the proposals of baile. And according to the comments of various bailaores, this situation has been produced due to the fact that the most of the companies have been dissolved because of the shortage of work, "so now, there are so many people working on a new project at home and letting their imagination run."
In any case, and according to what this newspaper could confirm, in la Bienal 2010, artists like María Pagés, Andrés Marín, Rocío Molina, Eva Yerbabuena (these ones with new performances) will be in the program. The bailaor Israel Galván also prepares his presentation in this Bienal de Flamenco, but it can be the surprise of the festival because in this occasion he will opt for the direction and not for the stage. As for the bailaora Sara Baras, she will be absent from Sevilla, well, she will stop dancing this April for personal reasons. Her last show will be in the theatre Falla in Cádiz.
When we wrote these lines, they were not considering the presence of the artists like Manuela Carrasco, Joaquín Cortés, José Mercé, el Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía or el Ballet Nacional de España for the program of la Bienal de Flamenco.
The cante
The section of cantaores will be nourished in this Bienal, especially with the artists who have stood out in the new generations. From 2008 to this year they have edited more than 14 first CDs of up and coming figures in the flamenco. These new cantaores will appear in different performances of this Bienal. They will combine the cante and the baile or the cante and the guitar.
The cantaores like David Lagos, La Tremendita, Rocío Bazán, and Antonio Campos will perform, apart from other figures like Miguel Poveda, one of the fixed artists of this festival. It is noticeable the absence in the cante figures like Enrique Morente, even though the program promises surprises with "traditional" cantaores, with whom they will do performances with various "venerables" of the flamenco.
Also it is noteworthy the section of the guitar. It is confirmed that the Bienal 2010 will count on Manolo Sanlúcar for its calendar of performances, but the same does not happen with Paco de Lucía, who has opened his appointment book for his tour in Europe, but he has not done it yet for the tour in Spain. It seems that it will definitely hamper him to set a date to come to Sevilla for the event.
They will not raise the price
In Bienal 2010, they will not raise the price of the tickets, and like other years, they will do performances of groups who work with disabled artists, among them the blind guitarist, "Vicente el granaíno". As for parallel activities, in la Bienal they will have expositions related to the urban art, given that artists of this discipline will make the poster of the festival 2010, and they are programming a performance in which the cante will be the major figure.
Also, the International Congress of European Historians of the Dance will be held in the third week of la Bienal, and they will present various books, among them " El flamenco que viví (The flamenco that I lived)", of the bailaor from Sevilla José de la Vega, also there will be national meetings of peñas flamencas and conferences. As for the places of the performances, they will repeat the theatres Maestranza, Central, Lope de Vega and Alameda, and the hotel Triana.
