It can be written in a various ways: Seguiriya (the most habitual), Siguerilla, Siguiriya etc. It is a dramatic, strong, cheerless and distressing cante , which, in its basic condition, is considered as one of the most exponent styles of the deep essence of the flamenco cante.

The lyrics of its verses are sad, sentimental and reflect the human tragedy, their suffering and pains for the connection with the eternal themes of love, the life and the death. The baile is one of the deepest ones, just like the cante. It is sober, vigorous, moving and ceremonial, which does not admit easy decorations. It is performed with a slow and paused compás. The accompaniment of the castanets, bata de cola and / or manila shawl matches well with Seguiriya. Both men and women can dance it.
